10 Ways To Get Traffic Without Google
When you have good ranking in Google search results pages it can be a great boost for your online business. However, a minor tweak by Google to their algorithm can send your pages plummeting to the bottom. And what if you’re a brand new business trying to get a foothold in an already well-established market?
Google may be important, but it’s not the only game in town. Consider the following 10 alternatives to Google search result ranking as additional ways to drive traffic. By diversifying you’ll also be covered should the inevitable ever happen and you fall out of Google’s good graces.
1) Social Media
Using social media is a great way to get traffic, with Facebook working well for many people. Be sure to link to your web site from your profile and let people know what you’re about. Post new content your followers will find useful regularly so they’ll keep coming back. Use the Share button to tie your web site to your Facebook page.
Consider using other social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or Vine. Depending on your audience they may actually prefer to use one of these services instead. It doesn’t hurt to try them all out if you have the time.
2) Blog Comments
Keep up with blogs posting articles in your niche. These sites can draw thousands of viewers a day and are a great way to get your name out there. If you read an article and have something useful to add, leave a comment.
Avoid leaving a link to your home page. If people find your comments insightful they’ll look at your profile and seek you out. If you do have something relevant about the topic on your web site, it’s usually okay to link directly to that content.
3) Question & Answer Sites
Along the lines of the previous tip, offering solutions on question and answer sites like Yahoo Answers or Quora is a great way to gain a loyal and thankful audience by solving their issues. Remember, you aren’t trying to directly market your site here, but be helpful so people seek you out.
4) Guest Blogging
Taking the idea of posting comments on blogs one step further, you can gain exposure even faster by guest writing a post for a popular blog. This will help show that you are an expert within your market, and some readers will be interested enough to look into your products and become future customers.
5) Content Aggregators
Having great content isn’t enough for Google when your web site is just starting out. You can still get lots of traffic by having your articles featured on a popular content aggregator site. These sites tend to focus on specific audiences, so make sure you only submit your content to sites that cover your niche. Here are a few marketing related suggestions:
- Inbound is where marketers can discuss and share what’s trending in the marketing world.
- BizSugar targets small business owners with news and tips
- Growth Hackers is for sharing marketing ideas
- Hacker News focuses on computer science and entrepreneurship.
- Alltop is an “online magazine rack”, they cover hundreds of subjects from adoption to zoology.
Being active in forums is a great way to get your name out there and drive traffic, and works along the same principles as posting comments on blogs or question and answer sites. There are forums on every subject and it’s easy to jump into conversions or start your own.
Before you get started, make sure you brush up on their rules. Be active and helpful, and people will come to you. Constantly posting links to your site will only annoy the community and possibly get you banned.
If you’ve never used Reddit, it works like a forum – but instead of each forum being hosted on individual web sites users can create “subreddits” about any topic and host it within the main Reddit site. Search for subreddits related to your niche that have a lot of subscribers and you’ll have a potential new source of traffic.
A unique feature of Reddit is the voting system. When people like what you’re posting they can vote it up, helping you gain standing in the community. But the reverse is also possible, post poor content and people can vote it down.
Since subreddits are run by the users who create them, make sure you check out the rules before you get started as they can very greatly.
You may not think of YouTube as a search engine, but more people search YouTube than many popular search sites combined. It’s the world’s second largest search engine, only behind Google.
How-to videos can be very popular and are a great way to get views. Even things that seem very niche, like how to change a taillight on a 04-08 Pontiac Grand Prix have gotten over 27,000 views.
No matter what your business, you can get great exposure by using a mailing list. Studies have shown that the conversion rate on email is two to three times that of search or social media. Best of all, it’s easy to do with great services like MailChimp that specialize in managing your lists and send out your email, so they’re no reason not to give it a try.
Google+ hosts many user-created communities covering a wide variety of topics. Join communities in your niche and add your insight to become a valued member. A simple post up-voting system helps gauge what people think of your content. Once you’re established you can feel confident to post a few direct links to relevant articles on your web site that the community will fine helpful.
A lot of the above methods have been abused by spammers, and this is something you want to avoid. Don’t just join a group and immediately tell everyone to visit your web site. Become a useful member of the community and members will seek you out. Once you have a place as a valued member, then you can occasionally link to useful pages on your site.
